So somehow I have made it to the Toastmasters improvised speech district competition (which seems to be winners from all the areas from Lyon to Toulouse 😳)
Tomorrow I’ll be giving a 2 minute talk on a random topic, with 30 seconds to prepare 😰😰😰
To make it worse, unsurprisingly the competition is online this year, so I have a whole new set of things to take into consideration.
I thought I’d share them here, as they’re relevant for anyone who has to present virtually.
⚠️ there is no room full of people to make eye contact with, the only eye contact is with the camera
⚠️you have to adapt your body language as depending on your position, the camera cannot see the whole of your arms
⚠️staying in one position works better than walking around the space
⚠️your voice and word emphasis needs to be even clearer than usual: online you can sound flat
⚠️I’ve decided to present standing up, as it makes my voice stronger. This means my computer is on a chair which is on my desk.
Wish me luck and good luck to all of you virtual presenters!
PS If you’re presenting in English and it’s not your first language, and you’d like some help with your voice, pronunciation and language, PM me
