“We have now issued you with a temporary login. Should you have any issues accessing the system, please contact the IT department.”
What do you think of these two sentences? No problem right?
But what if you’re sending this email to someone in your organisation who speaks English as a foreign language?
A client of mine received this and she said to me, “Catherine, I get really stressed when I get an email from head office because I’m not sure if I’ve understood correctly. I’m always afraid I’ve missed something.”
What’s the problem with this email?
😞 2 different meanings of “issue”
😞 “should” means “if”
Whoever wrote this email probably has zero idea that it could ever cause the person reading it stress.
Most global organisations have a disconnect in communication between “native” and “non-native” English speakers. In my opinion, companies should be investing in international communication training for all their employees, not just those who speak English as a foreign language.
