What’s the connection between Istanbul and Brexit?
Istanbul is one of the most vibrant and amazing cities I’ve spent time in. In case you don’t know, there is a re-run of the mayoral election happening at the moment, demanded by the president.
While I was there I saw posters for Binali (the ruling party’s mayoral candidate, who lost the first election) everywhere. Really everywhere. And I saw maybe 3 posters in total for Imamoglu, the opposition candidate who actually won the first time around. Élection campaigns are expensive and it’s obvious that only one party has the funds to fight the same election twice.
It made me think about the situation in the Uk with Brexit. Would having a second referendum be as undemocratic as this second election in Istanbul (as in the president didn’t like this result so let’s do the whole thing again)?
Or is it undemocratic NOT to have a second referendum for Brexit when voters were clearly misled and lied to?
